Thus, they require adequate skill in handling.

But before you bring a tokay gecko home, it’s important that you understand the proper care required to keep your new pet happy and healthy.

If you think your tokay gecko is sick, the first thing you should do is take it to the vet. Some common signs of illness in tokay geckos include lethargy, loss of appetite, and changes in coloration.

Metabolic Bone Disease or MBD

One of the most common health problems in captive tokay geckos is metabolic bone disease. This is caused by a lack of calcium in their diet. The symptoms include lethargy, malformation of bones or softening of bones and lack of appetite. If your geckos are suffering from MBD, make sure to amend their diet by adding calcium and D3 supplements. If symptoms continue, bring them to the vet.

Another cause common problem among tokay geckos is parasites. Parasites can be in a form of Cryptosporidium varanii, pinworms etch. Parasites cause the gecko to thin, vomit or loss weight. Some of the symptoms also include lethargy and loss of appetite. If you observe this symptom, you can use dewormer for reptiles in order to eliminate the parasites on their body. In the worst case, proceed to your vet.

How to get rid of external parasites

To ensure their health, inspect your gecko regularly for signs of parasites. You can look for small black dots on the skin, which could be mites, ticks or worms. If you see any of these signs, make sure you remove them.

Second, You can also give your gecko a bath every week in warm water. This will help remove any parasites that may be on the skin. Be sure to rinse your gecko thoroughly after the bath.

Disinfecting the enclosure at least once every month can be used as a preventive measure to do away with parasites. This will help kill any parasites that may be present and prevent them from proliferating in the enclosure.

Lastly, keep the humidity level in the enclosure at 50-60%. This will help prevent mites from getting established in the enclosure.

Things To Remember When Your Tokay Gecko Is Injured

If your tokay gecko has sustained an injury, especially from rusty or other wasted sharp materials, the first thing you should do is clean the wound with warm water and soap. Once the wound is clean, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment and cover it with a bandage.

You should also take your tokay gecko to the vet so that they can assess the extent of the injury and provide any necessary treatment. In some cases, surgery may be required. Again, be sure to follow your vet’s instructions carefully so that your tokay gecko can recover as quickly and safely as possible.

How to Keep Your Tokay Gecko’s Enclosure Clean

Clean the enclosure regularly with a reptile-safe cleaner. Be sure to remove all food and water dishes before cleaning. After cleaning, rinse the enclosure thoroughly with water to remove all traces of the cleaner.
